So concludes my first week at the Googleplex. Although I got quite a bit of code done, I'm still in what my manager calls CL purgatory as I wait indefinitely for my CL to be reviewed and possibly approved. Meanwhile I'm annoyed that I can't VPN into the network to finish the code I was working on today and yesterday so now I'm forced to wait until Monday to get anything done. Separating work from home is annoying as I do some of my best work at home and I'm more productive at night.
Meanwhile I've transfered cities to San Fransisco for the weekend as I hear Mountain View will supposedly suck the life out of you on the weekends from lack of things to do. Having lived in the Quiet Corner almost my whole life, I'm sure it would have been nothing compared to back home in terms of utter boredom, but I decided I might as well take advantage of my time in California and check out San Francisco.
San Francisco on the drive in
For now, I'm staying in the Intercontinental. I plan on either Ubering around the city or taking trolleys and buses. I've used Uber 3 times so far on my trip and it's been fantastic every time -- even at 11 pm after staying late at the office. While I'm here I want to see the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, and the Pacific Ocean. I already ate at a fancy restaurant inside the hotel called Luce (pronounced Loo-chay because it's fancy). It was great but expensive.
I went kind of late so it was pretty empty
I guess for now I'm forced to relax (note the oxymoron) as I have a wall mounted TV in front of my king size bed and a whole weekend to spend doing nothing productive whatsoever. There's also a Google office in San Francisco but I was told they frown upon campers (Googlers who don't technically work in that office or have a team there that they're working with on a project there).
I miss my view of the pool, now it's just an Apple office outside my window (I think it is at least, I saw an Apple office right next to the hotel)
Hopefully I don't get horribly lost on my lone quest across the city. For now I guess I'll have to settle with watching a movie over coding.
