It's officially my second week of being an intern already. Another batch of interns came in today, gathering from offices all across the eastern half of North America. They're the new Nooglers on the block -- literally. Our office takes up the entire block (and then part of a building across from us). We got to meet them after work today as we had a planned party at the Frying Pan for dinner.
We gathered in the room in which my group of interns had our first day of orientation. It was packed with a lot more new interns than my group had -- distinguishable by their newly received propeller caps and colorful lanyards.
After 10 minutes, the swarm of interns finally started to file out of the room, down the stairs, and outside into the NYC heat. It was only the already-oriented interns staying in the NYC office and the newer group of Nooglers, but we had effectively formed a parade of roughly 200 interns, about a third of which wore their Noogler caps as we marched across Manhattan to the Hudson River.
I had thought this morning that the Frying Pan was just an ordinary restaurant until later in the day someone realized it was on a boat docked at the piers -- which sounded pretty cool at the start. They even had a bar for people old enough to drink.
The Frying Pan... more of a boat than a restaurant
Upon arriving, we received stamps on both hands for entry and a colored bracelet to show if we were legal to drink or not. Stepping on the boat gave me flashbacks to the dreaded 7th grade whale watch, but thankfully the boat was not out on the ocean in choppy waters like then. Instead it rocked back and forth a bit -- enough to make it look like you were drunk when attempting to walk.
Venturing around, we saw there was a dance floor below deck and on the entry level was plenty of chips, salsa, and guacamole. We searched more and didn't find any other food. Disappointed, we found a spot to sit down, thinking maybe they would bring out more food later and we discussed plans of going back to Google for the usual dinner at Hemispheres.
Eventually they did bring out sliders and some other vegetarian option which I didn't try. We ended up leaving after deciding not to just have a ton of sliders for dinner, as did quite a few other interns. As a result, we had a welcome dinner back at the office with a decent-sized group of Cambridge interns.
After running off to a late meeting, I met with a small group of others and we ventured up to the rooftop terrace again to see the skyline at sunset rather than at dark. The results were pretty good.
It's actually incredibly windy on the rooftop, it took several attempts not to get a shot with a bunch of hair flying in my face even with the headband
I stayed a little later to play with the Legos again and scooter around the 4th floor. My technique's getting a little bit better. After getting a tip to place more of my weight on my heel, I'm a lot more stable and can even glide for a decent distance. I'm still not as good as the other Googlers, which scootering seems to come to naturally, but I'm a lot better than I was before, and that's all that really matters, right?
