That's What I Get

4 min read

It's the end of day 4 of my cold ever since I went on the yacht cruise. I had a feeling I would have been better off skipping out and studying like someone with no life instead of going out and having fun for a change. I wouldn't have lost so much time from work and studying.

I tried going to work although it's advised against when you're sick, but I only stayed a few hours each time. I didn't want to miss out on at least one free meal Thursday and Friday. It's a good thing my project is practically done so I'm not actually losing anything by not staying the full day besides just tying up of loose ends. My presentation is practically done and I just need to add in notes. The documentation probably needs some work too still.

Being sick in Manhattan is not fun -- even more so than being sick back home. Walking outside for any amount of time burns my airways from the crappy air. I'll manage to get ready to go out feeling not too terrible, step outside for just a few seconds, and my throat will start to hurt. I can't wait to go back home and breathe in actual fresh air again.

I had to venture out once over the weekend to get some kind of food. I ended up getting some ramen after dealing with annoying people while checking out at CVS. I don't know if it's because I'm sick of the city or sick of being sick or both, but I had no patience Saturday.

Then trying to use a gas stove for the first time to actually cook the ramen was another issue. It heats up a lot faster than the regular stove I use back home but I was worried with my luck I'd light the apartment on fire. The resident cat was underfoot as I was trying to shuffle around the kitchen too and I was already annoyed with how the day was going.

Kitty just wanted attention

Ramen's my go-to food when I'm sick. As soon as I saw on Friday that 5BB had a noodle bar with ramen and pho for lunch I ran over and got in line. They put all sorts of stuff in it including chicken, pork belly, seaweed, and an egg. I quickly downed the bowl and went back up for another. The chefs seemed surprised that I was in line again since the bowls weren't small. I'd never been so grateful to have ramen for lunch with my scratchy throat. Now it's just intolerably itchy. On the bright side I'm getting a killer ab workout from coughing so much.

My immune system must be incredibly weak considering no one else got sick from the yacht cruise. It's annoying that I'm already stressed out about conversion and now I have a cold to deal with on top of it. Seems like I can't win. If I just never cared in the first place, my immune system wouldn't be so weak to begin with. I just don't want to be that one intern that didn't get an offer-- and then have that followed up with literally everyone I know asking me if I got the offer when I don't have any good news to share.

I don't have the energy to spend on stress anymore so I'm trying to put what little I have left on studying effectively. One of my reviewers suggested a site to do practice questions off of so I spent the night at Google on Saturday doing that when there was no one around to contaminate.

I also asked my recruiter if we can talk about pushing my interviews back since I lost time from this cold. We're discussing that tomorrow along with turning a failed conversion into a second internship as a safety net. That and I have to figure out if I need to cancel yet another mock interview from being sick. This seems like it's going to be a bitter fight to the end at this rate.
